PDF · 5 pages

What's inside

  • The four pricing decisions: metric, packages, price, terms
  • A three-tier package builder
  • Discovery questions to test pricing
  • A pricing test log

Who it's for

Founders whose pricing comes up as an objection in every sales call.

Why it matters

Early-stage B2B pricing rarely fails on the number alone. It fails when buyers cannot tell what they get, how the price grows or which option suits them. If pricing comes up as an objection in most calls, the problem is often unclear packaging or a value metric that does not match how the customer gets value.

Working through the metric, packages, price points and terms in order stops you from debating a number in isolation. Testing those choices in real discovery calls, and logging reactions in the buyer's words, gives you evidence to adjust before you publish a pricing page that is hard to walk back.

How to use it

  1. 1Answer the questions in the four-decision table, starting with the value metric, and write down what the buyer's current alternative costs them.
  2. 2Fill in the package builder for Starter, Growth and Scale, renaming each to a real segment and defining who it is for, its limits and upgrade trigger.
  3. 3Make the middle package the one most buyers should choose, then check that each upgrade trigger follows naturally from your value metric.
  4. 4Use the discovery questions on live calls to learn how prospects budget today and which package they would pick, without leading them to an answer.
  5. 5Record each test in the pricing test log with the package shown, the price and the buyer's reaction, then revise before publishing.

The Pricing & Packaging Worksheet: FAQ

What is a value metric in SaaS pricing?
A value metric is the unit your price scales with, such as seats, usage, accounts or outcomes. A good one grows as the customer gets more value, so customers pay more only when they benefit more. It should also be easy for buyers to understand and predict before they sign.
How many pricing tiers should a B2B startup have?
Three tiers is a common starting point, because it gives buyers a clear choice without overwhelming them. Build each tier around a distinct buyer segment, not just a longer feature list. Make the middle option the one most buyers should pick, and set a clear trigger for moving up.
How do you test pricing with customers?
Ask about pricing in discovery calls before you publish it. Learn how they budget for the problem today and what it costs them, show them the packages, and ask which they would choose and why. Log every reaction in their own words so you can spot patterns across conversations.
