Who it's for
Founders whose prospects don't immediately get what they do or why it matters.
Why it matters
When prospects cannot quickly place what you do, the symptoms show up downstream: low reply rates, long sales cycles and pressure on price. The cause is often positioning that was never written down, or that compares you to the wrong alternative. Early teams tend to describe features instead of naming what buyers would do if the product did not exist.
This canvas works through positioning in a fixed order, starting with real alternatives and ending with a one or two sentence statement. Each step builds on the one before, so the statement is grounded in capabilities, value and the customers who care most. It works best when filled in from your best customers' own words rather than internal guesses.
How to use it
- 1List the real alternatives buyers consider, including competitors, spreadsheets, hiring, agencies and doing nothing, using what your best customers actually used before.
- 2Write the capabilities you have that those alternatives lack, then the value each one lets a buyer achieve, and drop any capability without value.
- 3Describe your best-fit customers, why they care more than others and the trigger, constraint or goal behind it, then choose a market frame.
- 4Complete the positioning statement template and check it against the quality checklist before testing it in outreach and sales calls.

The Positioning Canvas: FAQ
- What is a positioning statement?
- A positioning statement is one or two sentences that say who you serve, what need or trigger they have, what category you are in, the key value you deliver and how you differ from the main alternative. It is an internal reference that guides your website, outreach and sales conversations.
- What is the difference between positioning and messaging?
- Positioning defines where you sit in the buyer's mind: your alternatives, unique value, best-fit customers and category. Messaging is how you express that positioning in words across channels and personas. Settle positioning first, because messaging built on unclear positioning tends to drift from channel to channel.
- How do I find my startup's real competitive alternatives?
- Ask recent customers what they used or considered before buying, including spreadsheets, in-house work, hiring someone, agencies or doing nothing. Those answers are often more accurate than a list of direct competitors. Use their exact words to describe the alternative in your positioning.
