Who it's for

Teams with a good ICP but poor timing.

Why it matters

Plenty of startups build a solid ICP and still get silence, because the right company at the wrong moment has no reason to act. A buying signal, like a new leader in your buyer's function or a job post for the role you support, gives you a real and timely reason to reach out.

Signals also make messages easier to write honestly. Instead of generic personalization, your first line refers to something the buyer knows is true about their own company. Scoring signals against your ICP keeps you from chasing loud events at poor-fit accounts, and logging them shows which signal types are worth the research time.

How to use it

  1. 1Review the six signal types and pick the two or three that most often come before a purchase of your product, noting where you will find each.
  2. 2Complete the scoring table by giving each signal a strength from 1 to 3, writing why it matters for you and the outreach angle it suggests.
  3. 3Each Monday, pull new signals for your Tier A and B accounts and remove any account outside your ICP, however strong the signal.
  4. 4Write a signal-specific first line using the hiring and new leader angles as models, and only reference signals you can confirm with a source.
  5. 5Act within days of spotting a signal and log it in your CRM so you can later compare which signal types turn into conversations.

The Signal-Based Prospecting Playbook: FAQ

What are buying signals in B2B sales?
Buying signals are observable changes that suggest a company may have a reason to act now. Common examples include hiring for a related role, a new funding round, a new leader in the buyer's function, headcount growth, adopting or dropping a related tool, and visits to your pricing or demo page.
What is signal-based prospecting?
Signal-based prospecting means prioritizing accounts that fit your ICP and show a recent buying signal, then writing outreach that references that signal. Instead of contacting a whole list at once, you reach companies when something has changed. Fit still comes first: a strong signal at a poor-fit account rarely leads anywhere.
Where can you find buying signals for free?
Many signals are public. Check careers pages and job boards for hiring, press releases and funding news for new rounds, LinkedIn job-change alerts for new leaders, and LinkedIn company pages for headcount growth. Your own website analytics and CRM show engagement signals, such as visits to your pricing page.
