Who it's for

Founders and SDRs writing outbound sequences.

Why it matters

Writing outbound from a blank page is slow, and the first drafts most founders write tend to be long, focused on the product, and vague about why they are writing now. Copying templates word for word is no better, because buyers recognize generic messages quickly. What helps is a proven structure plus a clear sense of which parts need your own specific details.

This swipe file pairs templates for different moments, such as a first touch, a follow-up, a re-engagement or a LinkedIn connection, with the rules behind them. That way you can adapt a message to your buyer and your trigger, and still keep it short, plain text and easy to opt out of.

How to use it

  1. 1Read the rules table first and confirm you can name one real reason to write to each contact before choosing a template.
  2. 2Pick a subject line pattern and an opening email that matches your situation: a trigger, a common problem, real proof you can share, or a referral ask.
  3. 3Replace every placeholder in braces with something specific and true, and cut the message to under 100 words.
  4. 4Schedule the follow-up templates so each one adds a new resource or angle, ending with the polite close rather than repeated bumps.
  5. 5Add the LinkedIn messages alongside email, starting with a connection request that does not pitch, and pair message D with an email you sent.

The Cold Email & LinkedIn Swipe File: FAQ

How long should a cold email be?
Aim for under 100 words. Buyers often read on a phone and decide in seconds whether to reply. Keep one clear reason for writing, a sentence or two about their problem, one line on how you help, and a simple question as the ask. Cut anything that is about you rather than them.
How many follow-ups should a cold email sequence have?
A few well-spaced follow-ups is a sensible default, for example around day 3 to 4, day 7 and a polite close near day 12 to 14. Each one should add something new, like a resource or a different angle. Stop the sequence as soon as someone replies or asks to opt out.
Should I use LinkedIn and email together for outreach?
Using both often works better than either alone. LinkedIn can make your name familiar before or after an email lands. Keep LinkedIn messages even shorter than email, avoid pitching in the connection request, and reference your email so the two channels feel connected rather than repetitive.
