Who it's for
Founders sending monthly investor or board updates.
Why it matters
Investors read many updates, and the sales section is often where founders are least consistent. Metrics change from month to month, pipeline gets left out, and bad news is softened until it becomes a surprise. That makes it hard for investors to see trends or know when to help.
A fixed structure solves most of this. Showing the same metrics each month, with this month next to last month, makes trends obvious. Being direct about what did not work builds trust. A specific ask, such as an intro to a named role at a type of company, gives investors something concrete they can act on.
How to use it
- 1Define each metric in the table once, such as how you count pipeline created, and keep those definitions the same in every future update.
- 2Fill in this month, last month and change for revenue, customers, meetings, pipeline created, open pipeline and win rate, with a short comment per row.
- 3Write the highlights, lowlights and learnings sections in a few lines each, saying plainly what did not work and what you are changing.
- 4End with one to three asks that name a role, company type or specific need, so an investor can act on them without a follow-up.

The Investor GTM Update Template: FAQ
- What should a monthly investor update include?
- Keep it short and consistent. Include the same core metrics every month, pipeline as well as revenue, highlights and lowlights, what you learned about your buyers and specific asks. Showing this month next to last month lets investors read trends rather than single numbers.
- What sales metrics should I share with investors?
- Common choices are new revenue or ARR, new customers, meetings held, pipeline created, open pipeline and win rate over a rolling period. Pick a small set, define each once and keep the definitions stable, so month-over-month changes mean something. Add a one-line comment on any big movement.
- How do you ask investors for help in an update?
- Make the ask specific enough to act on. Instead of asking for general intros, name the role and company type, such as Heads of Sales at seed-stage fintechs, or a referral for a specific hire. Limit it to a few asks so each one gets attention.
